Regional Groups

The Association has a number of regional groups across the County - please click here to download the latest list

Although activities may vary from area to area, the regional groups exist to offer on the ground help, support and advice to anyone new or already involved in  biodynamics.  They often hold study group, preparation making and stirring events along with farm & garden open days etc.

Kings Langley Biodynamic Gardening Group

As far as I know we are the only Biodynamic allotment group in this country; but if there are others we would love to hear from you. We are a group of gardeners meeting to study Biodynamics, and who may have a plot (allotment) to put into practise what they have studied if they wish. The land we have is part of the Steiner School grounds, which came our way when the school bought the Priory (in 1978), which Miss Cross had as her school and applied biodynamic principles to the land from the 1920’s; and we also have some land from the Christian Community, from whom the school bought its land.
Our members are partly staff and parents of the school and partly people from the village who feel they want the best organic food and are prepared to try our methods; our rule is that we practise Biodynamic methods and non-organic pesticides and artificial fertilisers may not be used.   But we have communal stirring and spraying sessions of ‘500’ & ‘501’ BD preparations, which are great social occasions, as one member stirs while the rest of us chat! -   with frequent changes. And each member is entitled to one free dose of BD heap preparations per year (on paying their subs).  We also pay a (reduced) sub to the BDAA. and share the 4 copies of ‘Star & Furrow’ we get between us. We get cow manure from a local (non organic) farm, which is limiting, but we do our best, though we cannot hope for ‘Demeter’ standard.
We have 50 members at present who have a plot of a size they can keep under control as we have found that if a plot is too large the weeds take over and gardening becomes a burden and the gardener gives up!  And we want BD gardening to be a pleasure!  We find Maria Thun’s calendar most useful, as, using it we find we get good crops and very few crop failures. We are administered by a management committee who are elected at the AGM. And report back on the year’s events at the next AGM. At present we keep in contact (apart from the meetings) and report any mutually interesting events by e-mail, but are thinking of having a periodical newssheet as well.
We meet to study approximately monthly and are studying Maria Thun’s book ‘Results’ at present. We are a happy group exchanging plants, tips and information like most gardeners do! – and gardening Bio-dynamically working with Maria Thun’s calendar! Group contact  John Wells
