To apply for the training, you should choose one of the Training Centres listed and make direct contact with the farm or garden of your choice. Please apply (preferably in writing or by email), giving details of your interests and experience. It is wise to arrange a visit first. Once you have decided an application form should be filled in, countersigned by your prospective tutor and posted to the BDAA office together with a £50 registration fee.
Conditions: Apprentices are expected to participate fully in the work of the farm and the household where they are living in return for their board, lodgings and practical tuition. The cost of day release courses, seminars and block courses are carried by the training centres and there are currently no further costs to apprentices. A small amount of pocket money is usually offered.
Occasionally apprentices may be in a situation where they have to live outside the farm and come in daily to work and study. In this situation apprentices are expected to cover their own living costs and may need to meet the costs of seminars and block courses if their participation is less than full time. Special situations need careful consideration before hand.
Commitment to the Training
The apprentice training involves a full time commitment to the farm. In exceptional circumstances a part time training may be considered. The training lasts for two full years. Agreed holiday leave is included in the two years.
Overseas applicants: It is unfortunately no longer possible to provide assistance with visa applications for applicants from countries outside the European Union and European Economic Area. Once the course receives full validation this may change.
