Michael Hall School in East Sussex is the oldest and largest Steiner school in the UK. The school benefits from an extensive site spanning 100 acres that includes a 1-hectare walled garden. The space is used educationally and productively throughout the year.
A wide variety of produce is cultivated from seed supplying many local outlets in the village and further afield.
The garden is Demeter certified, contains 4 large poly-tunnels, an apple orchard and many outdoor cropping plots.
This is a great opportunity to learn about small scale intensive growing techniques within a unique educational setting in the Ashdown Forest. The immediate area boasts an array of sustainable farming enterprises including Plaw Hatch and Tablehurst Farms.
I am looking for a full-time person for the 2022 growing season that runs from March till October. You will be involved in all aspects of running a successful market garden. Tasks will include sowing, transplanting, soil cultivation and preparation, crop maintenance, harvesting, packing, delivering, selling and many other inter-related tasks. There is also an overlap between production and education so some experience of the educational side can be gained.
This is a full-time voluntary position for 7 months. In exchange, you will be housed in school accommodation with my family at the top of the walled garden. A living expense is provided along with unlimited access to the garden produce.
