Heckfield Estates is looking for a Head Market Gardener to join its expanding growing team and support a luxury hotel Heckfield Place with seasonal produce.
The market garden is set over 5 acres, with a large state-of-the-art propagating glasshouse and five polytunnels supporting the vegetable and soft fruit growing, that supply the hotels two restaurants with beautiful, truly seasonal and delicious produce. There is a young orchard, with more than 500 apple, pear and stoned fruit trees, which is presently home to our bees and organic chickens.
The market garden certified organic and currently in Year 3 conversion to full biodynamic certification with Demeter.
Renowned chef and author Skye Gyngell, Heckfield’s Culinary Director, oversees all seasonal cooking, while Fern Verrow’s Jane Scotter guides the growing using biodynamic principles.
The estate also grows an acre of cut flowers for the 45 bedrooms and rooms at Heckfield.
The market garden, is set within the original 340-acre Home Farm , a mixed arable and livestock farm ( also in year 3 of biodynamic conversion). Presently we grow mainly cereals. This year we are experimenting with a range of ancient grains with a view to producing them on a larger scale for breadmaking.
Suffolk sheep, saddleback pigs graze the land and flocks of chickens supply eggs for the kitchen , A herd of Guernsey arrived in late 2019 along with a purpose built dairy to produce our own unpasteurised milk, butter, cream, yogurt and, eventually, cheese.
We’re looking for an individual excited by the ambitious projects planned at Heckfield . We want people to help build a strong, hardworking, dedicated and creative team that can grow and learn within it.
For the position of head market gardener applicants should have at least three years experience of biodynamic or organic vegetable and fruit production on a commercial scale. Applicants must have a serious approach to the growing of food, and be willing to work hard to achieve the very high standards that are required for our guests. Here you would be organising and helping to run a team of growers to work efficiently and productively, to provide the restaurants at Heckfield with a beautiful range of exciting seasonal vegetables and fruit. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone to be involved in a progressive and creative farm to table project, which is still in its infancy.
